Michigan license plate laws you should know
Below are the four laws that most often trip up Michigan drivers. Rules are enforced at the stop, the inspection station, and at registration renewal.
Two plates required
MCL 257.225 requires passenger vehicles to display plates on both the front and rear bumpers. Motorcycles and trailers display only a rear plate.
Front plate rule
No exemption exists for vehicles sold without a front mounting bracket — owners must install one. Failure to display a front plate is a civil infraction in Michigan.
Registration stickers & display
A tab sticker affixed to the rear plate shows the expiration month and year (MCL 257.225a). Michigan issues a single sticker applied to the rear plate only.
Inspection / smog check
Michigan eliminated its vehicle emissions testing program in 2018 when the program contract was not renewed. No statewide OBD-II or tailpipe inspection is currently required to register a passenger vehicle.
Types of Michigan license plates
Michigan issues dozens of plate designs. These are the main categories you'll encounter on the road or see at the DMV counter.
